Most people don’t know what to do when they have a headache besides taking painkillers. But what if I told you there were ways to create immediate relief without medication?
Most of the time the underlying cause of headaches are not really understood – however people do understand what comes with a headache such as stress, being tired, sinus issues, tensions, etc. Each of these symptoms is a sign that shows us what to do and how to treat a headache or migraine.
Treating Muscles to Treat Headaches – Neuromuscular Therapy
Often times the location of a headache can be associated with tension in a specific muscle group or misalignment of certain bones. For instance the outer trapezius muscle, or the traps, is often associated with a headache or pain in the temple area. The SCM, a muscle on the side of the neck, is often associated with tension above the eye, a feeling of tension in the ear, or at the base of the neck. The sub-occipitals, a group of small muscles at the base of the skull, are associated with tension or pain in locations behind the eye towards the back of the head.
These symptoms that describe a muscle in one location causing issues and/or pain in another location are what is called ‘referred pain’ – meaning the issue in one location of the body causes the symptoms, often times pain, to show up in another location in the body. These networks of referred issues are a corner stone of NeuralMuscular Therapy (NMT) (or sometimes referred to as Trigger Point Therapy).
Therefore Any headaches related to muscle tension can be treated using NeuralMuscular Therapy. Each symptom is like a road map to which muscles are causing grief on which part of the head and we use this map to find the source of the problem.
Whereas a pain killer often only masked the problem NMT and direct work on the muscles can relieve the cause of the problem.
Bones, Posture and Headaches – CranialSacral Therapy
Now if there is a misalignment of the bones we can have a posture or tension related headache. Now most people when they think of posture probably think of the hunched over back – which can very well cause headaches – but there is also proper posture within the skull itself. Each of the bones in the skull breathes and actually moves within fractions of a millimeter – however despite how small of a movement this is it can create a massive impact on your wellbeing when it is no longer ‘breathing’ properly. Because of this breathing it is important for the bones of the skull to fit together with proper alignment.
When the bones of the skull are out alignment they can become ‘stuck’ or begin moving in inappropriate ways which interferes with the healthy breathing pattern of the skull
When this happens headaches and migraine can often result. A very gentle, yet incredible powerful, modality called CranialSacral Therapy (CST) can be used to treat this issue.
CranialSacral therapy works on the body by gently realigning the spine and skull – guiding each of these bones back into properly breathing alignment so that they are returned back in harmony and rhythm with the body’s natural alignment.
If any bones in the skull or base of the neck are out of alignment there can be constriction of movement and begin creating long term reoccurring issues within the nervous system and cardiovascular system. CranialSacral can treat many issues related to these constrictions
A combination of NeuroMuscular and CranialSacral Therapy can powerfully alleviate headaches long term. When booking a session we focus primarily on these modalities as well as using deep tissue to improve circulation and Swedish flow to create an enjoyable massage.
If you are interested in experiencing relief come book a session and start down the path of becoming headache free.
